On February 18, Prof. Eitan Shamir, Director of the BESA Center, and senior researcher Mr. Ran Segev participated in a discussion initiated by Knesset members Idan Roll and Sharrenย Haskel on the topic “The Day After Abu Mazen – Challenges to Israel.”
During the discussion, Mr. Segev brought up three key points that must be taken into account regarding the day after and Israel’s relations with the Palestinian Authority towards the advancement of a resolution of the conflict:
- The Palestinian Authority should fight terrorism and be committed to that fight. It must be able to activate the security mechanisms in an effective and efficient manner against terrorist organizations in its territory.
- The Palestinian Authority is expected to manage the civil life of the residents of its territory in a way that meets international expectations and in cooperation with Israel.
- The Palestinian Authority should be obliged to reach an agreement with Israel through political negotiations and not by relying on coercion and international enforcement.
