Iran: The Flaws of Containment

A containment strategy vis-à-vis Iran seems to be the preferred fallback option for the international community if sanctions fail. But "containment" will neither stop the Iranian nuclear weapons program nor calm the region, and this strategy may prompt aggressive or reckless responses from Tehran.

Strategists: Primum Non Nocere

The proposal that Israel should take a leading role in reducing the importance of oil is a clear case of transgression against the ethical imperative, which fully applies to strategists, "first, do no harm." Israel’s involvement in such a campaign is sure to destabilize the Middle East and stamp Israel as "enemy number one" of all oil rich countries.

Obama Should Withdraw From Afghanistan, Not Iraq

The US should withdraw its forces from Afghanistan because there are other states capable of shouldering the burden of stabilizing the country, and the threat to US security is no longer acute. Iraq, however, can be stabilized only by the US, and its long-term stability is a vital US interest with lasting and broad implications.
